pairing two boar guinea pigs
4 Answers
hiya i have aquired another male guinea pig (roughly 3 yrs old) in his own cage to be friends with our existing male (1 yr 6mths old) i have had thier cages next to each other and have slowly been letting them sniff each other and we had a lot of mounting, teeth chattering and warbling,(they had loads of food and cardboard hideouts) one day the dominance would be on our one and he would keep trying to mount the other guinea pig and then the next day it would have shifted on to the other guinea pig and back and forth after about the 4th day of this they had a bit of a fight but with no injuries and i have had them seperated since is there anyway they could ever be friends without this dominance involved i would be greatful to anyone who could let me know with thanks xx

Two males will generally be inclined to fight as both will want to be the dominant one, the mounting is an attempt to subdue the other guinea pig. Have you seen how sharp their teeth are, it was fortunate that they only had a bit of a fight before you separated them, next time could cause injuries, so would suggest keeping them separate as they are not likely to become friends.
Male guinea pigs are very terratorial, and are best kept in seperate cages until adulthood. If they're to live together happily, the cage must be large enough for them to both have their own space, and make sure that their food bowls and water are kept topped up at all times. One of the reasons they'll fight, is over food. Also, show equal amounts of fuss to each one. Guinea pigs can get very attached to their owners, so if one feels pushed out, he may fight with the other male for your affections!
thanks for your advice they havnt been out together much but when they are they follow each other round constantly! so i have been letting them out one at a time the other seems to pine to want to come out too. I do watch them avidly when thay are out together for any nasty behavior and split them when it becomes a bit heated but we have had no pain squeels or bad fighting i have watched vids on you tube of how they should be together i just want harmony!!! thanks all xxx
