Sample for the vet

I have received a reminder from the vet for my dog's annual booster injection but, this time, he is offering to check for kidney disease, diabetes, etc. I am required to provide a urine sample (from the dog). I have not been faced with this before; how do I get my dog to pee in a bottle?

If the dog is a he it is easy - wait until the flow of wee has started and stick a plastic container in the stream of well. Then decant into the bottle. It is embarrassing to do but easy.

If your dog is a she then - ??

My dog is a she and I am a he. we have known each other for over nine years but have never needed to be this intimate !!!

Procedure is just the same for a female dog. Just be prepared with a small plastic bowl, and wait till she crouches for a wee and pop the bowl under her. Then decant into a bottle as suggested in the previous post. Only a small amount of urine is required for the dip-stick test for diabetes. Hope you are successful in your efforts, and hope all goes well with your dog.

I have to provide a poo sample from my dog, but only when her tummy is upset and her poo is runny!! I think a wee sample is preferable.

(It's actually very easy to collect the wee in a small bowl when a bitch wees, (unless of course its a daschund and you can't get the bowl under her!).

Stupidly, I hadn't though about catching it in a bowl first !
I will have to follow her, bowl in hand, past a series of fenceposts as she doesn't seem to be able to resist marking (almost) anything upright. Incidentally, her name is Lottie. Thanks for treating my query seriously --- I wasn't taking the p*ss.

Amilcar, if you can't get a bowl under her, try a tray (or something similar) it might be a bit easier?

You may find it easier to use a very shallow foil dish, or old baking tray. Wait until she stoops down, and slide the dish beneath her. By the time she realises what is happening, you should have a few drops which is usually enough for the vet to test.

When working with racing greyhounds at the bigger tracks they always take a wee sample to test before racing. You have to catch it in a bowl and take it to the tester. One of the pranks they play on new staff is to tell them you need a poo sample and see the look on their face, and then the face of the tester when they turn up with a bowl full of poo!
