Cat injured and ran away while being cared for
17 Answers
Male cat approx 1 year old has wound inside back leg - vet suggested putting on cat collar to prevent it from licking wound. Cat was cared for 2 miles from its usual home (while wearing the collar it had to be kept closed inside) unfortunately it excaped this afternoon and hasn't been seen since - in its getaway the collar came off - and it ran through ploughed field, over ditch and disappeared. Child devastated - could it make its way to its original home 2 miles away or could it return to where it was being cared for? Any experiences welcome?

I doubt it will return to where it escaped from because it would not have been there long enough. It is possible that it could find it's way home. You should check out all the local houses to see if it has been seen-someone could have fed it.Get hold of the local paper and radio station to put out alerts. My cat went missing for 2 days so I posted notes through all 100 doors on my estate.Someone new thought he was stray and took him to a shelter.Luckily we got him back.
Don't give up.Good luck

Thanks for your advice - I hope and pray he will make his way home - we live in the country with a park approx 200 yards away - once he got over ditch - I didn't see what way he went - have telephoned a few neighbours to look out for him - he's used on the farm 2 miles up the road and we brought him down to our house to care for him (while wearing the collar) Thanks for your advice.
Sorry to hear about your cat. Try not to worry , he will probably find his way home...not to where he was cared for but to his 'normal' home. Meanwhile, phone the local vets. They usually have a 'lost animals' book where they will record your (and his) details so that they can be aware of someone comes in with what they think is a stray. Contact your local Cats Protection League or any other local cat shelters as they will keep an eye out for him if he is brought in as a stray. It can be worth putting a few posters up round about so that your neighbours etc are aware that he has gone missing. (Depends just how rural the area you live in is, I guess. ) In town it would be worth asking the postie to keep a lookout for him, but maybe not so appropriate in the country.
I hope he turns up soon.

Thanks for your most positive replies - my daughter has been out calling him - as she feeds him everyday at our farm - and hes used with her voice (I feel awful as I advised her to bring him down to the house, as I felt he could get hung or something happen him with the cat collar on) I brought him out of our little garden shed at approx 4pm today to dress his leg and he escaped - we've been driving round the little country roads, stopping the car and calling him but no joy - just hope and pray he will return to the farm - but he set off in the opposite direction. Thanks again
I do hope that your daughter's cat has turned up by now, I expect you've already looked in any suitable places he could hide in in the direction of where you saw him heading for when he ran off. He could well be alot nearer than you think. Cats do tend to get stressed when they have those collars on and I suppose what with that and being put in a strange garden shed that he didnt recognise was all abit too much for him, so he scarpered the first chance he got. 2 miles isn't so far for a cat so I'd be very surprised if he didn't find his way home sooner or later. I expect when he does return he'll be contained somewhere where he feels at ease. Did you say he was a farm cat who'd not been inside before? I know you'll be feeling responsible but keep in mind that you really was trying to make things easier for the cat by taking him home to care for him. When a cat decides it wants to get away then all hell and high waters won't stop it when the opportunity arises. Please let us know WHEN he returns.
Hi - still no word of him - yes he's a farm cat that has never been used closed in. He was always fed twice a day with his bros and sis and was always friendly to pet but never like to be pampered! It was just too much for him to close him in with the collar on - in a small garden shed with strange surroundings (after being used in a big farm shed with straw and machinery) and free to wander and hunt at his leisure. I will keep you informed if he returns and thanks again for getting in touch.
