it amazes me that so many people look to people on this site for help to serious problems they have with their pets instead of calling a qualified veterinarian. the advice may be somewhat helpful but for the sake of the poor pets i sure hope its not the only advice people base their decisions on.

Agreed peanut.  I think when giving any advice most of us state that vetinerary attention should be sought.  I know vets can be  expensive but this should be borne in mind before taking on any animal.  For people who have genuine financial problems, then the PDSA or RSPCA can help with costs.

Hello peanut. Fakeplastic is right. For general things, advice sought here is perfectly fine (cat/dog menstruation, dog moulting, spider poo! etc)  But for real medical problems a vet should be seen asap, rather than wait for an answer on here. I am just as amazed as you are at the lack of responsibility some pet owners have and personally, if people aren�t prepared for the bills, then they should have the pets.

No offence is meant by my comments to anyone�..it�s just my opinion.

It  seems to me that quite a lot of the pet questions are written by younger members and the cost involved in visiting a vet for some of the minor problems would be a bit hard on the pocket money, and I think its great that they can get peace of mind from the animal loving AB's.   I am sure if things get serious they would tap mum and dad up for the necessary.

Whilst I can see what you are saying Ember, I seriously believe that no child should have a pet and be expected to pay for its upkeep and vet bills.  Of course, the children should be encouraged to look after the animal, but  the responsibility lies with the parent.  It is totally unfair on the pet to leave it's welfare in the hands of a minor.  The adults should always keep a close eye on the pets health and take the necessary action. 

 

I have witnessed too many children being allowed to have pets 'as long as they look after them' and when the children get fed up with the animal then the animal is sadly neglected.  Adults should not let their children have pets unless they (the adults) are prepared to take on the responsibility of vets bills, etc. and have the animals welfare at heart.

I'm in full agreement peanut.  What amazes me most is the amount of menstruation/in season questions for just about every concievable type of pet!

I also get a little peeved when people refer to their lady puppy or female dog.  Call it a bitch, please.

Working in the pet industry for many years it has been my experience that most pet owners would rather get "free" advice than pay the money to take their animals to a vet. Anyone who has worked in a pet supply store will agree with this. We are constantly having to field questions that would better be asked of someone with a "DVM" or "VMD" after their name, and invariably when you tell someone their animal should be taken to a vet, they will say, "Well, I really didn't want to pay that kind of money.." Sad but true.
