Mallard ducklings

A female mallard appeared on Easter Sunday with 21
ducklings. Today I counted 18, but does anybody know
of any other large hatchings?

It sounds to me as if she has adopted ducklings from another brood as they normally lay up to about a dozen eggs max.
Each spring a Mallard makes a nest in woods near where I live, and when the ducklings hatch out she has to take them down to the sea which is approx 1/2 mile away, but she has to cross a very busy main road in doing so !
Sheer madness but she does it every Year !!

Thank you for your replies. I did wonder if she had adopted, but wasn't sure if that was the norm.

Ruthann, it is lovely to see them, they are like little dots dashing around, I just hope they survive.
