An oap friend of mine has been told by the Vet that the only meat her dog can have is from him at 6-50p per tin with vat on top due to a kidney complaint. Has anyone any knowledge of what is in this meat that it is so expensive as she can!t afford this.He has already managed to sell her 4 tins.
I had to feed my elderly cat a specific 'low protein' meat for her kidney problem. and yes it was expensive.
Whats the brand name - she can probably buy cheaper online
be careful though - if she cooks chicken and rice - chicken is high in protein and it may be the dog needs a prescribed low protein diet.
Call the vets - and say she cannot affod to keep this up and can they suggest alternative products.... Am sure they would be helpful!!
No wonder this country in its time has been dubbed "Rip Off Britain". Fair enough, vet's have a living to make, but that kind of price is disgraceful, especially for an OAP, lots of whom are on very limited budgets.
I'd get at least one other quote from another vet and would certainly be checking online, for example Petmed, there are quite a few reputable enough who could undoubtedly supply the requisite food a darned sight cheaper than above. It must be sprinkled with gold dust.
'Hill's prescription diet,'in a pack of four tins, was what the vet gave me for one of mine who'd been missing for 18 days when found. She'd lost a lot of weight and was quite poorly. The vet's price was extreme ! This product may well be what the vet suggested in the instant case. The OAP had best ask the vet what it was that was suggested. If it was that one then , obviously, it might be had a lot more cheaply online.
Hills Prescription diet is designed for various conditions I/D was given to one of mine for digestion problems, L/D for liver disease, K/D for kidney disease and so on. You can buy them all online more cheaply than your vet, as per link above.
There would be no benefit in giving a dog with kidney disease the L/D diet for example.
I worked in a high needs boarding kennels for 8 years and the best thing we found with this kind of thing is CHAPPI tined meat, it a lot cheaper and will do just the same thing.
