how do i stop my 5month old kitten from jumping on the kitchen work surfaces? my old cat never did it, well not that i ever knew of at least. thanks for any help

Set up a booby trap of pots and pans so when the kitten jumps up they clatter down and frighten him. If you are in the room when he does it use a water bottle to spray him so he associates that area with getting sprayed.

Perhaps if you put moth balls on the side, it will deter your little kitten.

Just persevere with discouraging the kitten when it does this; the water spray is a good idea as long as you are careful that he does not see that it's you causing the drenching! Contrary to popular belief you can train a cat, just not as easily as a dog.
My cat was always fed on the utility room worktop to keep the food away from the dog but she rarely went onto the kitchen ones. (Except once when I caught her dragging a package of cheese off the worktop so she and the dog could share! lol).

its best just to persevere with removing the critters from the work surfaces saying a firm no each time. as they grow older, they will get less interested in doing such silly things anyway. are they climbing your curtains yet? they wrecked all mine and it cost me about �200 to replace them. but...i still love them x

My kitten was the same, but we just persevered and lifted her down immediately every time she jumped up, and now at a year old, she doesn't do it any more - but then, she is very rarely in unless my husband decides that she has been burning the candle at both ends and keeps he in to catch up on her sleep - God knows what he will be like when it is the kids who are teenagers and not the cat!!

well dancairo its obviously not built into every cat the instinct to jump onto work surfaces as i pointed out before my last cat never did this as a kitten and my cat before that never did it however she was older when i got her. i welcome all the answers that have been useful and reserve the right to ignore stupid suggestions of cutting its legs off. do the RSPCA know about your hobby?
o and for those that are genuinely interested and want to help, yes he has been climbing the curtains, little monkey. and the water technique seems to have some effect. thanks guys.
