greyhounds

What is your opinion - good neighbour owns three greyhounds - keeps them out the back muzzled 24 hours a day only to take them off when he feeds them. He walks them in the morning and night. Never get into the house. They are kept in a small runway with their own house. They are not used for breeding so I really dont know why he has them but he "adores" them. has 3 children and does not smoke or drink. They are his hobby.

I do agree with dan here, Connemmara. Although there is no way in hell my dog would live outside, I suppose as long as his "pets" are sheltered and fed, he is well within the law.
Are they muzzled to stop them catching smaller furries?
Are they kept warm in Winter and cool in Summer? This is very important for greyhounds.
Some people view dogs in entirely the way you describe, but for me I wouldn't have a pet who I couldn't share my house/sofa with.
I can't imagine how the dogs feel about it, but I suppose if there's 3 of them, they have their own company at least.

Hi
I would never have my dog living outdoors but some people do so I would also agree with the above if they are being excercised and are kept warm in winter, cool in summer etc
Why does he keep them muzzled though? I personally think that seems a bit mean.......It would be like you having to walk around with your hand over your mouth all day apart from when you eat and drink.....Do you know his reason for this?

hi my husband used to race greyhounds over 30 years ago before we were married ,his were always kept out side the reason they are muzzled is to stop them catching anything . i once saw my husbands get a cat that had jumped into their run it was horrendous, i couldnt have my dogs outside she is laying beside me now on the sofa
The plastic box type muzzles are used to stop them biting each other if they should start to scrap, although I have to say I can't remember more than about two greyhounds that really needed them and I worked with them for many years. If there are two males kennelled together that is probably why. Most greyhounds know no different and are quite happy with a couple of walks a day and will lie in their bed and sleep the rest of the time apart from feeding times.
This is why they make such great pets, they adapt straight away to living indoors, provided they are given somewhere to sleep and are given regular short walks.
I should think they are well fed and looked after, and as I said above they really don't ask for much else, although they readily adapt to being 'pets'.
