My Puppy

Okay, so I have now got my new Staffordshire Bull Terrrier puppy. She's lovely and very playful (although maybe a little bit too playful, but thats how puppies are). I'm a bit worried because when she gets excited, she loves to bite things and whenever I tell her off, she tries to bite me! This is obvious puppy behaviour but when I tell her off for doing that she carries on almost like she thinks its a game and she doesn't take me seriously!!! When I tell her off, I say sharply 'No!' and point at her at the same time. When that doesn't work I tap her on the nose, but she still carries on trying to bite me and everything else in sight! Can anyone tell me if I'm doing anything wrong?

Yelp really loudly and then walk away. She will learn quickly that this is unacceptable behaviour.

push her down on her side.....hands on her hips & neck holding her down & say 'stop'! She will recognise & respect your strength over her and succumb to you.

The problem is that simply batting her away has her thinking that you are playing with her ! So she bites more, if anything, encouraged by your response. Shouting 'no' at the same time sounds like an encouraging bark when she's in play mood !The best tactics have already been given. It's important that she knows to stop because she may continue what she thinks is play biting when she's older and possessed of adult teeth and adult staffie jaws! Some dogs never quite abandon play-biting or , the lesser, 'mouthing' when adults . I've a wolfhound who mouths,rarely but mischievously, but the important thing is she never hurts in doing it, it's just a gesture. You wouldn't want even that with a staffie !
