....even pigeons? I do, but some I know try to deter them from their gardens.

As far as I'm concerned they are all God's creatures (if you believe in God) & deserve to be fed like anyone else.

I really enojoy watching them drinking from the bird baths & fish pond too.

That meant to say *crows* not cows... lmao
Hello Smudge,we feed all the birds,in Winter I make fat balls out of lard, seeds and ground peanuts, and as for pigeons,a lot of people forget that during the war years pigeons I believe were helping to save lives by carrying messages,I can't imagine a world without birds, everyweek we buy at least five loaves just for them.

.....back again - sorry for the delay!

Thank you for all your interesting answers - it's so nice to know others care about our wildlife. I love watching the birds & always have binoc's at the ready!

I was in Wilkinson's yesterday stocking up on wild bird food & got chatting to a really nice old boy, who said he was an avid bird watcher & fed them well too. When he saw the food, etc., in my basket, he pointed to the sunflower seeds & said "Be careful the pigeons & squirrels don't get to them". I told him that sadly, most of the squirrels around here had been culled by the local authority & that I did used to feed them, as I do the pigeons & collared doves. He was quite surprised - hence my question.

I couldn't bear to watch them sitting on the fences & trees, looking around & hoping for a tasty morsel, when all the other birds were happily tucking in! They are always in pairs, so would obviously be trying to feed their little families too..... ♥
Bird seed can become quite expensive when you get a lot of garden visitors. I found that the pigeons are fond of cheap seeds such as wheat. Most prefer these to the smaller seed so saving that for the smaller birds. About once a week they get a treat of proper pigeon peas.

Do you buy your pigeon peas from Asian food shops, supermarkets, or pet shops wildwood?
My visiting pigeons are great big fat country wood pigeons who have plenty to eat but still come to me for more. Actually, I really like them, especially their clumsy babies who have trouble balancing on branches and often swing upside down and fall out of the trees.

My main problem with feeding birds is in the winter when the rats think the food is for them. To be honest, we have to deal with the rats, but I feel sorry for them. They can't help being rats now can they ;o(
Just laughing about hammerman's 'cows' and thinking of them on the bird feeders.

I just love watching the wildlife around me. Far better and more therapeutic than the TV!!
I feed all of the birds, don't mind what they are! I am so happy that this year, in our garden we have one blackbird's nest, three sparrow's nests (the babies are just fledging!) and one collared doves's nest! so great to see them all growing! spending loads of time feeding my extended family, but loving it!.........I feel so priviledged to be involved in a small way!.....................

night smudge, sleep well,..................
We have nine eggs in our blue tit box. The first two eggs hatched today. Fascinating to see the mum eat up all the shell. Incidentally we live in one of the busiest streets in our town and the blue tits come back year after year. Traffic noise doesn't seem to bother them. We have some large trees nearby with fat juicy grubs in them. I also enjoy watching the blackies running about. ( I don't like the pigeons.)

Hi Stockethill - we live near to the town too & the blue tits come back to the nesting box every year.

We've had all sorts visit our gardens, including foxes! Love watching them in the early hours strutting down the road!
All the eggs have hatched today and there's just a mass of wriggling bodies. They are being very well fed. We are off on holiday tomorrow so by the time we come back they will probably all have gone. We'll miss the best bit when the mum coaxes the wee ones out into the open.

Have a lovely holiday Stockethill. ;o}
As far as I'm concerned they are all God's creatures (if you believe in God) & deserve to be fed like anyone else.

As an atheist I can promise you that you don't need to be a believer in God to feed pigeons lol, but you do need to have a love of all things natural, believe it or not, even atheists can achieve this!!
