planning pemission for a shed

at the risk of sounding stupied i want to put a shed in my garden its 22ft by 8ft do i need planning permission for this.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.My shed is 20 by 8 - I built it this size because my understanding is that you don't need planning or building regs for structures less than 15 square metres - 22 by 8 is slightly over I think.
However, it doesn't do any harm to check with your local authorities.

depends 22x8 is just over the 15 square meters where technically you should but it's probably close enough

That DIYdata site information is now out of date since the rules in England were changed on 1st October.
This is what you now need to follow (in England).

Sheds are now come under Permitted Development rules. The minimum distance from the boundary seems to be 2m, not 1m as suggested above.
Ask another question if you are still unsure.
Building Regs will not apply - the area rule on them is 30 square metres of floor area - not 15 as suggested above.
Wales and Scotland are in the process of doing their own thing, so check (but they seem to follow the same lines as England).

We built a two bedroomed bungalow in our garden and didnt need planning permission. The guidelines were that as long as it wasnt more than 4 metres in height (3 metres if it was attached to the house) and didnt take up more than half the area of land around the original house, we didnt need it. It was all above board and building inspectors made regular visits.
