Meg is a 15 year old border collie, I've spent a fortune over the last few months tempting her to eat, tinned mince, rice pudding, M&S shephards pie, etc...
She's been deaf for years, eyesight still good, alert and wants to go for a walk, albeit a stroll rather than a rabbit chasing experience.
We love them and look after them for as long as it lasts.

If you really loved them you would do the right thing. I am fed up of reading all this crap and think you are being cruel. For dog's sake let them go with some dignity. Blind, deaf, incontinent, unable to walk - you should be ashamed of yourselves. There, I've said it, and no regrets for doing so. What do you think the vets are going to do - perform miracles?
I instantly feel sad at reading this kate, I was where you are almost a year ago!........had to hav e my little mate sent to sleep last December! Truly, it was totally devastating!..........Still miss him, but for the last few months, I can remember the good times, and cherish the great times we had with him..............will be thinking of you and rex...............
Lankeela, very harsh indeed. These people are not CRUEL in any way, just trying to do their best for loved pets. Sometimes it is very difficult to do what is necessary even if we know what needs to be done. It is a decision we have to make. to make and although, I, like you take the decision quite early it is not as easy for some.
Slinky Kate, in your case I believe perhaps that you should let him go. He can't be happy. Miss Meg, obviously it is not time for Meg yet because she still wants to go for walks and has quality of life.
But it is a terrible decision to have to make.
I wish you all well and certainly don't think you should be ashamed of yourself!!

I've had dogs as my best friends for 50 years. The look in their eye tells you when they've had enough then you do what is best for them, sad but it has to be done when the time comes.
Thanks for this post kate, yelenots, jules and welsh have made positive comments, we're all thinking of you at this difficult time.
Take care, Wendyxx

Harsh maybe, but I will not apologise for saying how I feel. I have any animal put to sleep when it is the right time for the animal, and bugger my own feelings. Ask yourselves if you are doing this for the animal or because you can't face it. Quality of life is essential. It doesn't get any easier no matter how many animals you lose, but that is no excuse to shirk your responsibility to your beloved pet that has given you years of faithful love.
Euthanasia is an emotive subject Lankeela, but you can't just label people as cruel and tell them they should be ashamed of themselves because they are not like you. These are people who have had long standing relationships with their beloved pets. I don't think they keep them alive for their own selfish reasons - I think it is difficult to come to terms that a pet is dying and people cling on to their hopes.
We are all different!

Lankeela - we are all doing the best for our beloved dogs we are NOT being cruel. We have spoken to our vet about our dog's health and as long as we can keep her blood sugar levels under control she still has quatlity of life. Yes her diet has changed she is blind and deaf and struggles to get in and out of the house but so does my elderly mother and I wouldnt put her down! We will all know when the time is right and we have to say good bye......none of us need you to tell us!
