I used to think they were passing on a message, now I'm not sure if it's just infectious.

Our dogs dont bark when nextdoors bark yet if they hear a dog barking from the houses behind us they bark!

Owners know that their dogs have different barks. "I want to come in now" is very different from "Great! we are going to play ball". If we can understand our dogs why not other dogs?

Yes they do.Listen and you'll hear a great variety of barks, the variety being in pitch, in frequency, in loudness, in rhythm and combinations of these.The 'Is there anybody there?" bark is markedly different from the "There is someone there" bark !And they understand a body language too. Stanley Coren has written several books on the subject with titles like "Do you speak dog?"

Dogs are pack animals and their survival has depended on pretty sophisticated ways of communication.

my dog barks at anything and everything, can be so random sometimes and even if he is trying to communicate, i honestly don't think any other dog would understand what he's trying to get across!

Well when I was little, I thought that 101 Dalmations by Dodie Smith was perfectly possible where Pongo and Missis used the "Twilight Barking" to locate their puppies. My favourite children's book of all time.

I wonder if there are regional variations in their barks just as we have regional accents, and indeed are there many different dog languages?
