My cat Rover was very hungry but kept being sick and was losing weight in front of my eyes - a simple blood test revealed he has severe kidney problems. He takes a tablet for this every morning and is quite back to normal (except for his current tooth problem). Also worth checking for worms, if he has a worm the worm might be getting all the nourishment.
Incidentially Rover won't eat the special kidney food (and I don't blame him), I just buy him good quality senior cat food.
Rover's latest blood test is checking for thyroid but he's certainly not losing weight now.
I'd get a second opinion if I were you, just in case vet No. 1 has missed something.
