I've just seen the most humongous massive snails I've ever seen on tv!

It was on a kids program and this woman had on in her hand and it covered the whole of her hand and im not even lying! What snails are these and are these edible?

When I was young I used to get a jamjar with a cover and go round peering into the hedges (there were a lot of those around then, all built up now) and find snails for my grandfather. My grandmother used to boil them and they made a noise when they were in the hot water. It was horrible, but my grandfather loved them. He would have enjoyed one of those giant ones. Couldn't eat them myself, having heard them screaming as they boiled.
