Maybe a cat fish - they get pretty big?
Or could be a Barbel. They can grow up to 3 feet and have four little beardlike bits dangling from the mouth.

The Wels, Siluris glanis (sometimes called the European Catfish).

It has six barbels and the average adult length in the UK is around 75cm, though can reach up to 500cm in mainland Europe - I think you could count that as large.

Tench (Tinca tinca) and variants of Cyprinus carpio (ie common, leather and mirror carp) are all large fish and have barbels.
