There is a nest in my shed between a plank and the roof.
I don't think it was used this year but this afternoon I noticed a few bits of moss etc on the ground under it.

I always thought that nests were only used for rearing the young and then once fledged the nest was abandoned and the birds roosted in trees.
Is that wrong?
And if not, why might there be activity at the nest?

Thanks.

The birds could simply be using it as a warm, safe roost over the winter.
And pecking the insects out, hence the moss on the ground.

So do many birds use nests to sleep in over the winter Chaffinch?
And do they use the ones that they had their young in, or just any nest they find?
