Hi, I am trying to buy a scope for birdwatching as a Xmas present for someone. He already has binoculars 8 x 50, and he wants something a bit better to go birdwatching in Goa. He isnt a fanatic, but it is a hobby, whenever he is out and about. He is also very knowledgable. so dont want to get something rubbish.

I havent got a clue.

Could someone give me an idea of what I should be looking for /asking for. Maybe online or a shop. Possibly Amazon ??? Around 60.00.

thanks in advance.

try the RSPB site they may have stuff. You can pay anything from £50 to hundreds for a telescope. Also if you have a local wildlife centre they sometimes sell new and secondhand scopes.

Thank you for that I will have a look at the RSPB site,.its going to be a rush now before xmas , should have started the research earlier.

I realise they are very expensive, and might progress to a better one sometime.

we bought a scope at an RSPB open day where they had scopes set up to try out, you may need to look at a tripod or even a fitting that goes onto a lowered car window.
Can you get to a RSPB reserve or shop jeannamacs? They would advise you and are extremley helpful.

This seems good value. Spending £60-00 would be a complete waste of money IMO.

Thank you for your replies, I have since been in touch with an expert birdwatching friend, and he is going to look into this for me.

As you have said i will need to spend much more than this for an entry level scope. thanks for the link.
