With the new high profile advert in centre screen they are hard to avoid.

I'm guessing through 'clever' data-mining wizardry key words are being identified and a seemingly relevant ad is inserted.

I have spotted a couple of potentially insensitive ads. Most recently one for online dating in a thread posted by someone who was looking for relationship advice.

Is there any human scrutiny of the ads, to give a level of compassionate thought to the suitability of some of the ads?

No.
However we do generally block really crap ads.
Do you get that elsewhere on the web?
Umm FB are always throwing advert at you !!

Sometimes they are amusing but just occasionally they could cause real offence, especially when someone is feeling vulnerable.

I have no idea Umm, I would imagine that there is an element of human scrutiny....I can't say I've seen many Anne Summers ads appear on the Daily Wail website ;-)
"Do you get that elsewhere on the web?"

How do you mean? Targeted ads? Yes, on all of it. Human scrutiny? No, almost never.
No human intervention. Bots scans posts for keywords which trigger 'relevant' ads.
A lot of it will be "re-targeting" stuff.
I usually get boilers .............. today it's about retirement ........... are the Bots trying to tell me something ;o)
"However we do generally block really crap ads. "

...you really really .... really ...sure about that ?

LOL. Let us know which ads you think are really crap in an email and we'll try and track them down/remove them.
I must admit I rather grudge the amount of space that big new box takes up.

Still, the site has to pay for itself. I'm going to suggest on the Apotheosis site that we worship Ab Editor by clicking on some of the ads!
only jesting ed, i can't see any ads.
"only jesting ed, i can't see any ads."

Scab.
oi thats not nice. with all these posts about ads for dating old ladies, visiting the holy land with germans and erectile dysfunction, i'm starting to feel left out.
Maybe you should unblock the ads Ankou, join in for a good old moan :)
That was my point Ed. Bet no emails are sent to Facebook moaning about it!
Would some serious clicking be pleasing oh mighty Ed...
