If we report one user's questions/answers repeatedly, does this have the effect of reporting the user?  What if we wanted to report a user and we felt we needed to give a reason to justify doing so?  Just interested.  Thanks.

Instead of reporting the postings, it would be wise to contact the editor, using the contact button at the bottom of the page and explain how you feel about a particular user.  A question of mine has just been removed because of a particular user's comment - I really don't know why my question disappeared!

Thanks FP - I found that button earlier (just after posting this Q - i suppose that's sod's law!) and I did indeed contact the editor.

Thanks flaming, i understand your advice (just!) but my point really was that I wanted one person to get a smacked wrist and wanted to know how.  FP's advice solves that problem.

The ed doesn't normally smack wrists, but I do know that they take issue with the Suggestions section being used to create friction between users. It's not that kind of site 'acw'. We've been having slanging matches here before and thankfully the creators of those ones left or were banned, please don't start again. Try to be harmonious in your postings. It's not hard when you apply a little (common) sense.

Ok, I take your point abfandango and I do understand what you're saying.  However if that means I have to sit in silence and take abuse from other users because they don't like my opinions, then you're right, this is not the site for me.  I said nothing inflammatory, merely a comment about upholding the law, and I got abused.  Still, "turn the other cheek" I suppose.

Acw if someone is rude press the report button or contact the editor. I think I know who you mean this user has posted some very abusive replies on the paedophilia thread in the news category, the very bad ones has now been removed. Why should any one on AB put up with abuse?

I agree, acw: this is primarily a Q&A site, and while discussion and debate is okay, abuse is not. Go ahead and report it when it happens to you, or to anyone else. Anyone using the site has some responsibility to try to keep it clean - I believe the report buttons were introduced at the request of users.

But can someone explain to me what actually happens when (and if) one reports another user?  Do they and their q's or a's get banned - it appears that I usually end up being banned and I really don't do anything wrong - maybe chat a bit.

I don't think anybody would dream of wanting you banned Netty.   There is a difference between reporting a posting and reporting a user.  Quite a lot of questions and answers get banned for being too chatty (mine included) but a few users are regularly abusive on this site and, although their  postings get banned through reporting, they still remain as users and can continue causing trouble.  I think this is a problem which should be addressed by AB.  acw has come across such a user.

AB clearly aren't interested in my concern - at least not through this forum.  I think I probably just need to be a bit more thick skinned.  I mean the user was only attacking my morals, personality and way of living my life, not my race, colour, creed, sex, size or age!!  I guess, as SO MANY AB posters are always feeling compelled to point out, there are bigger things in life to worry about.

Said person blatantly uses multiple sign ins anyway - so can't do anything about it even if they get booted.

One person can be both Downright and Rude I think!  I was trying to be hypothetical, but never mind - you guys found me out!  If you're curious, see the "news" thread about illegal voting.  The question was posed by flashpig.  You may think I was over-reacting, but I was really offended by the attitude and judgemental comments.  Thanks for being sweet guys! :-)

I've been subjected to it as well by a Downright and Rude person!  Hope it gets sorted out eventually because it spoils the site.  I had noticed the thread in question.

Yes it's all a bit personal - I also thought you were male acw - sorry.
