i know the word c*ck can be rude but it also has other meanings to it like a male hen for instance. I was naming a pub which has this word in it but it came out as ****.  Surely this is an exception?

that's the problem with robots, they don't do context
there used to be a problem with words like scunthorpe that gave us endless hour of fun. I wonder if there still is?
evidently robots can learn!
If you live in Chorlton-***-Hardy, your dog is a cocker spaniel and your favourite painting is Rembrandt's ********** you're going to have problems on this site. The Asterisk Monster is a voracious beast. I'd like to say he's as thick as pig-****, but my chances of getting past him are minimal.
I take back what I said about cocker spaniels. But what about if you like the 1970'* *** Waterloo and your favourite play is Two Gentlemen of Verona?

Hi all,

The Robots are extremely conservative in their views, operating as they do on a policy of zero tolerance in regards to profanity. Some male chickens and unfortunately named pubs have been known to fall unfairly by the way-side because of this.

Yes, as this is a community/family site, we have to err on the side of caution.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

ABE, if there is a "zero tolerance on profanity" why are folk allowed to post obscenities by using dashes or asterisks, can The Heavies not program the "Robots"  to recognise them?

I know you edit them out when you get the chance but in ma view they should not get through to start with.

There are young folk who view this site and I wish certain folk would remember that.

AB Ed, I don't know if it has ever occurred to your team that - more often than not - the asterisking-out process actually draws people's attention to the concealed and unintended 'profanity'. This applies in circumstances where, had it been left alone, the young and innocent - whom the robots are presumably trying to protect - would never even have noticed.
The thing is totally counter-productive. Of course, the obvious, unmistakeable and unambiguous crudities such as those beginning with 'f' and 'c' should be deleted.

Maybe, to avoid drawing attention to the swearing, and to add some light hearted joy to the site, everytime a swear word is used, instead of replacing it with stars, the robots should replace it with one of the following words:

  • Darling
  • Sweety
  • Petal
  • Flower
  • Sugar-Plum Fairy

Then insults would become words of friendship, and anger could be avoided, and peace love and harmony would spread through the AB.  :-)

*puts down the spliff* ......... only kidding! :-p
