This is a question about the clue writing competition in which readers are given a word for which they have to write a cryptic clue. This week's winning entry was  "It's a top winter warmer" as a clue for the words ice skate.Does anyone see any connection that they can explain? Many thanks for help.

Does ice skate in a posh voice sound like housecoat? I know ots wrong but I can't see anything else apart from perhaps ice = top as in kill

That was the entry for "Christmas jumper" & is a double definition - "it's a top" & "winter warmer".

Ice sounds a bit like ace meaning top

Thanks, Lie-in King - I knew the winning entry for Ice Skate was something else entirely!

The entry for "Ice skate" was -

Runner’s very keen on this footwear that’s easy to slip on

Cryptic definition – the skate has a sharp (keen) runner and is easy to slip or slide along the ice on

Question Author

So does that mean they are giving out 2 prizes for the same entry?

Question Author

Sorry, forget my question.I have just read Lie-in King's explanation.

Contest No 2052: Ice skate
Contest No 2053: Christmas jumper

Two competitions, one prize for each.

We crossed posts 🙂
