Abortion
Can i get peoples views on abortion?
This subject tends to come up in religious debate quiet a lot but as an atheist (and a male) I am never going to have to face this dilema.
However, I have to say that i cannot wrap my head around any potential mother wanting to kill a life that is developing inside of her.
A previous GF of mine had 2 abortions (before I met her) and I couldnt understand the casualty with which she dismissed the ending of 2 lives.
Thanks!

In the early stages, most definitely not in 3rd trimester.
As an aside, there was a prolife march in Wasington d.c. today and one of the speakers was a man who was an abortion survivor.
I had an abortion of a very much wanted and loved baby at 20 weeks. My waters broke too early and although I held on as long as I could it was making me so unwell that my life was at risk. I had another child at home and there was no way that Aurelia would survive at 20 weeks, nor hold off being born for another 4 weeks till she was viable So it was a choice I made.
She actually survived for 20 minutes on my chest. She spent her whole life surrounded by love, and had 20 minutes more love than some children get in their lives.
Thanks, I get that and it's not (particularly!) my intention to make you feel bad, just trying to point out that women who have abortions do so for varying reasons; probably as many reasons as there are abortions. Yet people still say things such as you have, making sweeping assumptions about such women. Just trying to open your eyes and mind a bit
I think it is one of those really difficult situations where circumstances and context are relevant. Many rightly have a view but unless and until you are in that situation it is very difficult to understand.
I do however think that women are negatively judged for terminating a pregnancy - whatever the reason. For many it must be an absolutely terrible decision to make. Women who have miscarried are generally treated with sympathy, whereas women who elect a termination (even for the most compelling reason) do not have the same sympathy shown to them.
It is probably easy to judge the woman who effectively uses abortion as a form of late birth control. Less easy to judge a lady who terminates to save her own life or a 14 year old who has been raped or a woman in an abusive relationship who cannot go on, much less inflict that upon a child.
My view is that it legal and long might it remain so. Being in favour of a woman having a choice ought to be in respect of any woman. Without her being judged. Only if you have been there can you really understand.
And religion has much to answer for and should not come into it.
