Does anyone else find it frustrating when you go to the trouble of replying to a question with a supplementary like 'are you the joint owners' or something in order to give a better answer, and they never come back again .. .these are usually newbies in green ...

I frequently encounter this, along with a general lack of acknowledgement of an answer, and have found that it has little to do with the shade of ABer.

Presumably this can often be explained by the question-setter closing the question and therefore not receiving email notification of further answers after having clicked on the Got an answer? box.

I believe it would be a useful addition if each closed question could have an indicator of its inactive status, thus affording would-be posters the opportunity of not wasting their time on an answer that may never be read.

Excellent suggestion, kempie.

But then again, us oldies (in an AB sense), still like to trawl around the topics looking for questions, (no matter how old), to give an answer to !!

brachi - I prefer my responses not to fall on deaf... eyes!

Admittedly this is a position I took up at a time when searching the site was easier said than done. Now, at least, all answers should be part of a (more) readily accessible archive.

(btw trilobite (as was), you are my AB elder by a matter of weeks, so I do not take kindly to your labelling of me, by default, as an "oldie"... it may befit a fossil such as yourself but couldn't you come up with something more dignified for the rest of us?)

An interesting thought .. what would one call a seasoned AB'er .....

A 'YZZZZZer'? :) (pronounce wiser?)

Wow that's a lot of answers ! Oh well I suppose its a bit like charity work at times, you don't always get thanks but it makes you feel you are doing something worthwhile !

why should people aknowledge your answers though? You all seem like you give yourselves a big pat on the back for answering questions, so why do you need someone else to do it too?

i dont really mean the above sentance how it sounds, but what i mean is, that you get your reward by getting a sense of inner peace and well being that you have answered someones nagging question, so why care if they dont thank you too? I woulg have thought that by its very nature this site was to pose questions and have them answered by other people, not clog up the place by having loads of posts about how usefgul the answer has been

Good manners cost nothing and at least if a star is given (which hardly clogs up a post ) at least you know your answer has been read .Also if people have gone to a lot of trouble to research something or give you good advice it does no harm to say thank you in the thread.I would not dream of not thanking someone who does something for me in the real world and it doesn't hurt to have good manners in the cyber world either.
Ah, so that explains why my name is in green on here! So when does it turn a different colour?? Oh, and i always like to thank anyone who gives me a reply - manners maketh and all that!
It will turn grey after you have been a member for two weeks Acorn.Welcome to AB .Highly addictive but good fun !
Turn grey?? Hope thats not an indication of things to come!!! ;)

Well I was not referring to a pat on the back or acknowledgement kazza, just that when you need more information to be able to answer the question properly and you ask them a supplementary they do not reply and therefore you cannot continue the thread. That is what I was talking about ....

ah, i see what you mean, i got your meaning wrong ... it sounded like you were sticking your lip out for not being thanked for replying.

Anyway, dont get annoyed, just think of it as their loss that they never got your little nugget of advice

kazza12345 - why should people not acknowledge an answer? It is but common courtesy.

You make reference to the "very nature <of> this site"; there is no need for you to guess at what this means as it is covered in the Using The AnswerBank section of the FAQs (with particular reference to Qs 13 and 14).
But i presume that means how you can thank the person if you want to. There dosent seem to be any compulsion to do it. If you ask a straight "does anyone know the answer" question and you get given the answer, i dont really see the need to thank someone for that answer, after all it's not like they were compelled to give it to you, and i'm sure they didn't answer to get thanks, but simply because they knew. People are on this site to get answers to questions therefore the thanking people for their replies seems a bit redundant as it is what the website is intended to do. I go on some games websites because they provide games... it dosent seem all that nessacary to thank the moderators for providing them. As i said before, i didn't quite catch the meaning correctly of the original question, and i would agree it would be frustrating to ask a question to a poster and not get a reply, but i don't agree that people should need be thanked for replying. In fact, no-one has thanked me for contributing to this thread, what a swizz!
...but lady_p_gold has acknowledged your response in the post four up from this.

Once again, I am not specifically asking for thanks, just suggesting that acknowledgement is not too much to expect.

People! People! (or is that AB-ers! AB-ers!)

S'funny how those who have responded to this thread (with the exception of acorn (and most welcome you are a, - please don't be put off by this)) are mainly old hands.

So why are we griping with eachother over it? Let's just... answer questions, have a bit of a debate now again, and ....er...just ... love eachother, man!

(My god- I've turned hippy (no offence hippy) - you know what I mean).
kempie - you remember my trilobite days ! ??

Anarchy - Peace - Arthropoda

I know what you mean lady - you ask for more detail and nothing ever happens - you assume someone has just posted a question then abandoned it, and you think, well, if I had answered it I would have been completely wasting my time. It is discourteous. Their loss, though; it means they'll have to go do their own homework.
Hey - just a footnote - ive gone grey overnight!! Do you think its because im being put off by threads brachiopod??? LOL! And yes, i do know why as shaneystar kindly told me.
