When you create sub sections of topics would it not be a good idea to block the ability to ask questions under the main topic, to force people to use the subtopics?

Do you like the sub sections Panic?

I love your screen name, wish I'd thought of that.

Yes I like the subs, but to see if any questions interest you, you have to check through both main and subtopics, which partly defeats the object.

Someone tried to nickname me PB at a previous job, and it tickled me so when I was thinking of a username it just seemed right.
I suppose you are right, if we use (hangs head in shame) the sub sections properly then i'd be easier to scoot around for what interests you.

How long have you been on here?
Question Author
About a month or so. I find it quite interesting and good for a chuckle sometimes.

It's great for chuckles. Were the sub sections in place when you joined? A lot don't like them because it made it more of an effort to go through, me included!!
Exactly. I and others have been asking for this ever since the sub-topics were introduced.

"Food & Drink" is a perfect example of why this should be done because not only is it possible to post in. the main heading but also in the sub-sections "Food" and "Drinks".
It should be the reverse - all items should listed be under the topic heading, with the sub sections allowing you to go to your choice.
Do you not realize that this is why there are fewer Questions from ABers ?
Hard@it, maybe I didn't make my point very clearly. What I mean is that, for example, it should NOT be possible to post a question directly in the heading "Food & Drink" when there are also sub-headings "Food" and "Drinks".

It should not be possible to post directly in any heading when there are sub-sections to that heading. As Panic Button says, arranging things in the way he/she proposes would make it more likely that questions get posted in the most appropriate section.
I agree with hard@it. All questions within that category should be available under the topic heading to allow quick general browsing and the sub- topics should effectively be a filter on those questions to only show a subset of those questions which someone is specifically interested in. Not sure if I explained it clearly there but hopefully you get the gist
before the sub sections i spent a lot of time in H&G but i only visit the main section and possibly the "garden" sub section so i am missing most of the questions in others sub's as its to time consuming to go through them!
SteveD If you block questions to the Main Topic there will be no Main Topic.

Just think how often you could be helping someone if you have the opportunity to read all the ABers questions, obviously bypassing those of no interest to you.

I can understand that people want to go direct to their own subject and there is nothing wrong with that, but I am sure there are many questions that could have been answered by others that have missed them.

Rugeleboy and SuzBoo are stating very simply what I am expressing.

I certainly do not use AB as much as I used to because of this format, which is a shame but...................................Cheers Hard@it
