Sequence Numbers

Could you consider allocating a sequence number to an answer as it is posted, and displaying it. This way, we could see by gaps in the sequence where there were once contributions now banned/hidden. Often the removal of answers makes a question read oddly.

I know it's been suggested before:

That's a great idea Whiff. Saves us looking stupid sometimes as well.
and what's wrong with making ABers look stupid? Good for the soul. And odd-reading threads are a useful challenge to the intellect. You think Sherlock Holmes found his leads neatly labelled 'Clue 1', 'Clue 2'?
I'm always shocked by the amount of times Sherlock is mentioned on here.
