I am confused. You say Mother's day is this coming Sunday, but here in the US its May 11. Who is right, or do you celebrate earlier in the UK?

Thank you all for the answers, I had gone to Wikipedia for the May 11 date. Just wanted to know why the difference. Also I apologise for the confusion, I have long been a member as mouse53, but could not log-on so re-registered. Hope I didn't break any rules. Thanks AB, I was finally able to negotiate all the advertisements to get here. I don't remember there being so many ads.
We are right, of course.

This is a prime example of what is happening on the net with blogs and all the nasty comments. This wasn't about who is right, but getting information about the dates. Or is this how you treat people from the states, like you are better? I know our history and was wanting more information about the UK, not a smart-assed remark. I believe the Aussies have a W- word for the type of person who responds to visiters so poorly

Bravo, In A Pickle, my point exactly. Thank you so much. Everyone else I have met here has always been so cordial ( well mostly, lol ).
hardly a nasty or snide remark. mouse did ask in the question 'who is right....?'

it was just an answer in its simplest form.

I wonder if it would have been an acceptable answer had panic said 'the US is right, of course'

oh and dont worry mouse, you havnt broken any rules by reregistering.
Well 1mouse you did, in your question, ask who is right, and I suspect that panic Button was being tongue in cheek in saying that Britian was right, and not being rude at all. BTW in Spain Mothers' Day id always the first Sunday in May
Hi mouse! Sorry if this is in Vinny's link, but the two days are totally different.
In the UK the correct title is Mothering Sunday and not Mother's Day. That name has been pinched from the US in recent years and now, sadly ,seems to be here to stay.
It stems back to the time when daughters in service were allowed home to see their mothers during Lent., bringing with them gifts of flowers and a special cake called a Simnel Cake.

I see that in the future I will have to properly word my questions. I could care less who is right, just didn't think it was necessary to be so rude. After all isn't Britian always right? I didn't ask to be born in the US, just circumstance. How would you like to have a clown for a president? I really would rather have the Queen Mother and social medicine, than the rich, money run government we have. You are very lucky to live in such a beautiful country with so much colorful history. The US is succeding in ruining everything here, just last week our petrol went up almost a dollar and rising. We will soon catch you. If you don't make 3 figures here you are poor, and can barely get by. Hope to our Lord you don't get sick as you'll be finished, because one could never pay the astronomical med bills you will incur.

Sorry about getting off subject and Happy Mother's Day to all you Moms in the UK.

Thanks Cetti for educating me, I now have a much better understanding of the 2 holidays. So Happy Mothering Sunday to you all.
Different sense of humour over there obviously.
Chip on shoulder I think!!
No offence was meant, mouse.

You unfortunately took my light hearted banter as an insult.

As others have pointed out, you did indeed ask who was right!

I do not seriously believe anyone is right.

In this country we often have light hearted banter with our friends, and watching programmes such as MASH, I know you do aswell. Britain and America have long been friends which is why I felt able to engage in such banter with you.

Perhaps this is confirmation of what Winston Churchill said, that Britain and the US are two countries divided by a common language.
Panic was showing an example of our sense of humour mouse(or humor).
He is a fan of West Bromwich Albion F.C. so has a well developed laughter muscle.
Another sample of British humour(humor) could be that the U.S.A .celebrates July 4th as independence day, whilst Great Britain celebrates July 5th as " Blimey! That was lucky ,we got Canada" Day.
Anyway happy Mothering Sunday to all those American moms on May 11th.

OK, It seems I am out of line. I accept the fact that the remark was meant as banter and not an insult. Perhaps you are right, Americans take things way too serious and I got " out there a ways ". Thank you all for setting me straight. On a lighter note, my wife watch " A Fine Romance " all the time thanks to PBS. Judy and Michael are way funny. And yes, I am a Monty Python fan. American humor is not all that good.
Hi mouse
My feeling is that mothers day is just a way to make us all spend money on greetings cards and bouquets at 25 a go! So I guess it must be an american idea so you must be right.
Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May in Austria, Germany (and other European countries) which would be the 11th, but since that is also Whit Sunday this year, it's been brought forward to the 4th.
In European Spain it is always the 1st Sunday in May.
