One of the rules of the site states "Use appropriate language.  This includes your choice of nicknames, which should not be offensive".

AB Eds. surely the reaction of regular posters makes it clear that nicknames that are extremely similar to other users are offensive to a lot of users.

Just noticed we now have a smudge_emma, appearing on Body & Soul - Hot Flushes!

Are people going to look at the first half of the name & assume it's me - no course not AB Ed - it's not really that confusing is it?

As I have said elsewhere, we should not underestimate what it feels like to have another user using an id very similar to yours, to the point that readers may think it's you.  I believe it must feel like an attack to your personality.

Hi Hgrove - As you are probably aware, I've been smudge since I registered in 2002. But we now have Sludge, zmudge, smudge_emma, etc., whatever next!

I feel sorry for people who can't think of an original name for themselves. It's quite flattering really. Bless 'em!
