Now it's against the rules to post stuff unrelated to the topic heading, how do I get a message to someone to tell them to look at something I've written elsewhere? Chatterbank won't do because the person I want to alert rarely goes there - and the posts move so quickly anyway, he's highly unlikely to spot me amongst it all. A dilemma!! In the absence of PMs, I'm wondering if a separate message board for short personal messages would be helpful?

my university runs a pretty good system. You can put in a request to e-mail someone; they forward it and the recipient has the control to say yeah or nay.

Naz, PMs is a better idea than publishing personal email addresses. At least with a PM we have to option of refusing to accept messages.

That's exactly how the PMs used to work DT. No problems. We accepted those we wanted to speak to and declined those we didn't want to speak to.

You create another email address that you don't care about with and post that on here and then use that to exchange your proper email.

I also agree that a quick post in another thread apologising to the OP would not be too bad, or even a FAO in a section they go in, maybe with a note in it to the ed to please remove once the person has seen it.

either way may get removed, but it's hardly the end of the world if it's done it's job.

With PM, there is nothing to stop offensive messages being sent ... on the forum, they're easily spotted and dealt with (ish).

Naz - The old PM system was like FB in the way that only those 'friends' who had registered with you could send messages to you.

To contact another member, simply click on their profile to view questions they've posted. Then send a 'reply' to an older post, asking them to view your post elsewhere. AB's system will still send them an email, telling them that they've got an answer. (I've had emails telling me about answers to questions I submitted 5 years ago!)

I believe the Ed has posted previously (or maybe a previous Ed) that PMs broke the site at the time.

I may be mistaken though.

I think you're right Chuck. I think it caused technical problems. I'm sort of thinking of the meeting place in airports with this where people can go just to pick up a short message.

I do remember that <i> in a post with no closing tag would italicise the whole page ... priceless.

The PM facility used to be via SAB, as I recall.
As most folks over 'here' were also able to be 'over there', you'd switch to SAB and send a message, or a request to send a message.......
When AB and SAB came to a parting of the ways, the PM facility semed to close down.
