Mostly by people that can't do crosswords.

Any way to automerge these with the originating question when they realise a mistake has been made, but the poster doesn't realise they can simply add to their OP?

In many cases they are new to the site and if they make these errors they'd probably fail to follow any merging procedure.
Do you also get frustrated by posters who don't tell you the number of letters or mistype the clue (when omitting one word or getting a tense wrong can make a huge difference)?

No, I ususally just give a completely bogus answer to throw them off the already stale scent. :-)))
