Illustrated book - Seasons fighting?

Does anyone recall a beautifully illustrated book, probably from the 70s or 80s involving seasons fighting? The armies were almost moomin like furry creatures but used WW1 or WW2 technology such as telephones and tube train, on which tired commuter went on to get to hibernation places when Winter came. Any help gratefully received.
