Not exactly what you asked, but Anthony Beaver has managed to pin down what it was like to be in Stalingrad or Berlin during the Second World War.

First an apology. His name is spelled Antony Beevor. Books are Stalingrad, and Berlin, The Downfall 1945. He writes extremely well with a huge amount of detail, and you really feel you are part of the action. I never thought I would say this, but after reading Stalingrad, I felt for the German soldiers as they died in terrible circumstances in the bitter cold, starving and isolated. Thoroughly recommend all his work.
If you haven't already read him, Laurie Lee's books on his experiences in the Spanish Civil War are excellent.

Another one just occurred to me - Christabel Bielenberg. The Past is Myself. She was an English woman married to a German and it is her story of what it was like to live in Germany during the Second World War. He was anti-Nazi but was suspected of being part of the plot to assassinate Hitler, and was arrested. She convinced the authorities otherwise and he escaped, and they met up again with their children after the war.

Another one for the Spanish Civil War - 'Or I'll dress You in Mourning'.
Larry Collins and Dominique La Pierre.
One of the best books I have ever read. It is actually about El Cordobes and his career in bullfighting, but please don't let that put you off. It is an account of the poverty before, during and after the Civil War for those who were on the 'losing' side. The title comes from what the bullfighter said to his sister before he went into the ring; that he would either be able to provide for his family or he would be dead.
