Thanks Tilly 2.I will invertigate.
Does she only like classics ?
If she likes historical fiction you can't go far wrong with Sharon Penman or Margaret George.
My mother in her 80s was also very well read in the classics but she absolutely loved the Harry Potter books!
Question Author
She likes classics because she likes a good story, not sure about historical fiction, I will check.
For historical fiction you can't beat Jean Plaidy, if she is still in print.
Terry Pratchett
Absolutely loved Vanity Fair.
And if she enjoys it, you could get it on DVD as a follow up - not the film with Reece Witherspoon, but the series on tv (BBC?) Andrew Davies. Excellent.
Has she read Jane Eyre or Anna Karenina ?
Cold Comport Farm .... so much fun and a classic ......
Comfort....... can't type!!
I love that book, Mallyj. Dark humour.
Fabulous isn't it Tilly2 ? Only book I have reread loads of times.... makes me chuckle still.
Anything by the Brontes. I particularly liked Villette by Charlotte Bronte...said to be better than Jane Eyre. I adored it.
If you want to stick with the classics how about Daphne du Maurier or John Buchan
So many wonderful books - I'll think a bit.
Back again - anything by Georgette Heyer. Intelligently written historical romances - very careful research. I love them, my daughters have caught onto them. I assume she's read Austen.

Too modern might not be comfortable, hope this helps a bit. If anything else comes to mind I will be back.
Life and times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson. Many of the things and people mentioned therein, she'll recognise even although it's American.
Would your Mum like P G Wodehouse ?

I have just started re-reading all the Blandings books and I am laughing as much now as I did 30 years ago, when I first read them !
