Reading Books For 4 Year Old Who’S Struggling

The son and heir has had his parents evening and he’s struggling with his reading
I’m tempted to consult a tutor but, before that, can anyone recommend any phonic friendly books for a boisterous 4year old

Which bits does he struggle over Ric? I mean there are so many reasons why a child might struggle with reading that its hard to suggest without knowing what the problem is.....and has he been screened for dyslexia?

I would not be overly worried as he is only 4. Perhaps he just needs time and practice to come to terms with phonics?

Hi Ric,
strip it right back and make it fun. We stuck up these laminated posters to our fridge, it's colourful and fun and engages them. Make it fun to read them as you pass them.

“Boisterous 4 year old” is the operative term, I think. He’s still tiny and is having much more fun running around than sitting still and trying to decode strange squiggles on paper.
Don’t get a tutor. Read him bedtime stories and get some books with fun pictures.

I think that they always give an area that needs to be worked on, but he’s only 4 - I’d leave him be for a bit.

Just make sure books are fun, no pressure, rude books about poop, and bugs might work better, daddies find these fun too. Also books that make sounds especially dinosaur ones. Word games might be fun, word dominoes if you can find them where you match the word to the picture, just be seen to read and enjoy books, children like to copy grown up too

I like the idea of dominoes- might try to get him some phonic ones
If I was his mum I’d read to him every night but I only see him 2 a week and his mum tends to be busy at bedtime

I'm surprised that they're worried about his reading at four. My grandson started nursery in September and is working on phonics but there are no books yet, just the actions and little songs. Children tend to catch on when they're ready. I'm a strong believer in learning through play at gour that's what your grandson should be doing. I wouldn't worry about him, keep reading to him, make books fun and he'll get there.

Julia Donaldson books are fun to read like The Gruffalo etc. Do not push him to read himself yet. Make sure he is comfortable with the alphabet and knows the sound for each letter. If he likes Paw Patrol there is a five book set, small size books, for phonetic reading. Can’t remember the name but Amazon has it. No tutor necessary but keep it fun

We had magnetic letters and numbers on the fridge. They were well used and helped a lot.
