Can not remember a book

I can't remember the title or author of the book. I read it about 8 years ago. A man is enlisted in a goverment program were he is given a drug. every 10 years he gets really sick and ages backward 9 years. He spends his years fighting wars for one goverment or another. The years may be wrong but thats the general idea. This been bothering me fo 5 years please someone help.
