Could you possibly mean Harriet the Spy, by Louise Fitzhugh? This was already a classic when I first read it as a wee tot in the '70s:

thank you, you are right . I am silly. My son who lives in Honk Kong, asked me to get the book for my grandaughter who is 7, I did searches on all the book sites and couldn't find it. He phoned me and he confirmed I was looking for the wrong title. But I am very impressed, once again, my question has been answered on this briliant web site. Thank you.
