a childrens book about a mechanical racehorse

I want to know the name of a book I read as a child. It was about an inventor who had made a robot horse (it looked real) and entered it in a race. There were kids helping him, one could pilot the horse from inside. There were other people doing the same thing - lots of sabotage etc .
