I read a book years ago about a man on an island(?) who built an improvised ice making machine and became fixated with the idea of introducing ice to the natives. Can anybody refresh my memory as to title and author

Thanks! I think I must have lost my copy, but I'll trawl through my attic book stack to see if I can find it for a reread. So many books up there I need a librarian to come and stay for a week to catalogue them!!
