I dont read regularly as I just dont always have the time. I prefer to pick a book up and read it intensely for a few days until finished - so usually when I'm on holiday.

Have recently read 'Fractured' by Karin Slaughter
and No Time For Goodbye by Linwood somebody

My fave author is James Herbert.....

So I quite like those dark - murder - crime kind of novels

Can anyone recommend any good ones? I have some Amazon vouchers to spend and would like to treat myself.....

(along with any really good movie DVD's you may have seen too!!!! Recommend away!!!)

Peter James writes some good stuff. I've just finished "Dead Simple" which is a crime thriller. Brilliant read. "Twilight" and "Sweet Heart" by him are supernatural if you fancy a scare or two!
IMO Michael Crichton writes some pretty good thrillers
Am reading Next at the mo.
All the Karin Slaughter books are very good. If you are into Horror like James Herbert, you should try Shaun Hutsons books as they are very good. I would also recommend Karen Rose as her books are brilliant and Richard Montanari as well.

DVDs - The Boat that Rocked is quite funny with a great soundtrack.
Midnight Meat Train is a great horror as well as My Bloody Valentine and The Children
Get Smart is very funny and so is Lesbian Vampire Killers

Have Fun!!
Try Michael Connelly's 'The Poet'. He writes great thrillers and it's difficult to put down any of his books once you start reading.
Dean Koontz - The Husband

Dean Koontz - The Good Guy
I'm with jj. If you like James Herbert you will like Dean Koontz, or Robin Cook. I also like James Patterson, especially his Alex Cross books.
Jan ...

Dean Koontz also has the "Robert Goddard" factor

... where you're constantly thinking

"Nooo, don't tell me HE'S a baddy as well ?"
Yep agree with all the above and if you like Karen Slaughter also try Kathy Reichs.
Jeffrey Deaver is also good.
Yes I agree jj. Some of his early stuff is really quite dark. Scared me when I read them anyway.
Agree with JMR - anything by Michael Connelly featuring the LAPD detective Harry Bosch.
I agree with Dean Koontz, one of my favourite authors. A lot of it has a "paranormal" side to it though, for want of a better word. I tried Shaun Hutson too, but didn't like it, it was a bit "cheap" to me, ie: sexual scenes, innuendos...that weren't necessary to the plot.
For pure crime/thriller/scientific investigation I'd recommend Patricia Cornwell though, especially her earlier novels, like Post-mortem . It's also best to read them in order. I wish I could read them for the first time again! lol
also look up jeffrey deaver, james patterson, alex kava
Max - agree completely about Hutson and Cornwell, had completely forgotten about her!
Also like Val McDermid, A Place of execution is very good.
Oh, I missed your asking about DVD's...Well, I recently watched the "Cracker" series with Robbie Coltrane, and I was bawled over! Absolutely fantastic viewing, come of it quite scary. Remarkable acting too! The box set is currently available at HMV online for £17.99, which is a bargain.
Kathy Reich is also a brilliant writer, bit like Patricia Cornwell
Very dark, gritty, unputdownable.

I'll go with Herbert, Koontz, King, Patterson, Reichs, Karin Slaughter, and also Simon Kernick and Sam Bourne...
Mo Hayder is my fave at the moment, enjoyed Tokyo but the Jack Caffrey books are fabulous.
You have to read them in order (I think birdman is first) but beware the first couple are very dark and might be offensive to some people (my husband think I'm weird for loving them ...I'm really not!!)
The underlying story of Jack Caffrey and his missing brother is brilliant although it does leave things unfinished in the later books I found, great reading, give them a go if you have a strong stomach!
i;ve3 read all Kathy Reichs temp Brennan series of books, the new one 206 Bones was abit unlike the others. i also have seasons 1-3 of the series from the books, Bones, series 4 is out next week and series 5 is being aired on sky now
