It really depends what you're in to, but for macabre with a (usually quirky) twist I don't think you can do better than Roald Dahl. His adult books are hugely under appreciated. From getting away with murder, to selling the ultimate aphrodisiac, to making millions cheating casinos, they cover pretty much everything! There are a number of books containing collections of his short stories, including 'Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life', 'Over to You', 'Switch B!tch', 'Kiss Kiss' and 'Someone Like You'. Well worth a look.
Anton Chekhov, anything by this author. All his books are good!
I recommend The Complete Short Novels, Lady with the Little Dog and Other Stories
William Trevor's short story collections are fabulous.
For a ver English author, probably well out of favour these days, how about A E Coppard ? One of his stories (in PFD format) can be read at http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a1115.pdf
Try Guy de Maupassant. Very interesting short stories, mostly about keenly-observed character descriptions, human situations, and people's foibles.
Dubliners by James Joyce. Men without women by Hemmingway.
