I am looking for the title and author of a childs book i loved as a child

I remember there were what looked like giant bumble bees and i think a monster type thing climbs a mountian and something about chewing gum. I only remembered it recently after reading a book to my son and one of the illustrations was very similar with giant bumble bees. Can anyone help me? I do remember i read it alot as a child.
