Is the film version of to kill a mockingbird almost as good as the book?

I cannot remember reading this book, as its been over 40 years since i read it, but the film seems complex with lots of small details, which i assume need lots of immagination to appreciate, so it wasnt only a racially motivated story.

(I first read it at the age of 12 and have re-read it many times since.) It's a well-made film; I wouldn't want to put anybody off watching it. But I'm glad you're going to re-read the book as well; it's one of the half-dozen greatest 20th century novels, and a real page-turner, too!
