Thanks Revshirls. The memory I have is a very faint one and when I heard it was a Paul Robeson song, I thought (rather sadly) that I might have remembered him singing on the radio and not my Dad. Not so!! In Paul R's version he sings "lulla lulla," like lullaby and the one I can remember is the "Tallullah" version, so it must have been my Dad. It's such a special memory.

My mum used to sing this to me also, i have been looking for the rest of the words, but this is how her song went, "oh loo la loo la loo la loo la bye byes, does oo want the moon to play with? All the stars to run away with?They'll come if you don't cry, so loo la loo la loo la loo la bye byes in your mummys arms be creeping and soon you'll be a sleeping loo la , loo la loo la loo la loo la byes. Thanks so much for this question. I've been trying to find out what this song is for years. My mum used to sing this to me (50 years ago) and I used to sing it to my daughter but had to make up half the words. I heard it once a few years ago on the radio sung by a black singer but missed the singer's name. My mum also pronounced it 'Loola' rather than Lulla as in Lullaby. Maybe there was another version. I heard an Irish man singing it on Radio 4 this morning and he sang 'Tooralooralooraloorabyebye'....it obviously had a powerful impact on so many people.

Hi everyone. This beautiful lullaby was sung to my girlfriend by her late father when she was a little girl. It's taken me ages to find it but I have a recording of Paul Robeson performing this at Carnegie Hall in 1958. It's a bit crackly but I put that down to it being emotionally charged! it's so touching and brought back so many happy happy childhood memories for her. I've just listened to this as it's referenced in the book I've just finished - Playing With The Moon by Eliza Graham - although in the song, the baby is playing with the stars!

My Gran sang this to my mum and my mum sang it to me. And now I am expecting my littlen I will sing it to them :)

It has evolved as it's travelled through my families generations and the "lulla" is pronounced "Loo-la" and not like "LULLAby"

This is how our version is sung:

I don't care how it is sposed to sound but this carries heavy sentimentality to me and my family and hopefully goes strong on generations to come :) x

I don't know if anyone is still reading the answers to the question but it's so lovely reading everyone's own memories of Lula bye byes. My Mum says my nan (who will be 99 this year!) sang it to her when she was little so I'm wondering if it's older than the recorded song? My mum sang it to me, and I have been singing it to my 3 year old daughter every bedtime since she was born and now she loves it too and knows the same words as I do; we say 'loola'. The words we sing are:

Stars to run away with?
They'll come if you don't cry
Singing lula lula lula lula bye byes
Into Mummy's arms come creeping
Soon you will be sleeping singing lula lula lula lula byes

I think it's lovely that each family seems to have adopted a slightly different version; long live the oral traditions!! :-)
