One poem that I will never forget is "Dulce Et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen. I read it while in year 6 at school so aged 10-11. Has stayed with me ever since xx

Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat by T S Eliot
There's a whisper down the line at 11.39
When the Night Mail's ready to depart,
Saying 'Skimble where is Skimble has he gone to hunt the thimble?
We must find him orthe train can't start.'
All the guards and all the porters and the stationmaster's daughters
They are searching high and low,
Saying 'Skimble where is Skimble for unless he's very nimble
Then the Night Mail just can't go.'
At 11.42 then the signal's nearly due
And the passengers are frantic to a man—
Then Skimble will appear and he'll saunter to the rear:
He's been busy in the luggage van!
He gives one flash of his glass-green eyes
And the signal goes 'All Clear!'
And we're off at last for the northern part
Of the Northern Hemisphere! etc etc
Like answerprancer, I too remember it for the rhythm - we had to say it like a train going down the track, getting faster and faster. At the age of 10 our school class proudly won the Leicestershire Choral Speaking competition saying this (and Hiawatha) and I've never forgotten it!!

Spike Milligan was one of my childhood heroes, I loved his poems (and stories).
I can still remember and recite a few by heart.
'Silly Old Baboon' is one that I recite to kids sometimes, I 'customise' the last line "I've just heard today that he's well on his way, he'll be passing through Acton at one!" to suit the location :-)
Another favourite is 'Doctor David Mantle' (went to Bintle Bontle Boo).

I too 'did' both The Highway Man and The Listeners at school and they've stuck with me, along with Christina Rosetti ones (A-levels). My favourite poem is Jabberwocky but also love The Owl and The Pussycat and many funny poems from the Comic Verse book (poems selected by Roger McGough) which I've had since I was at first or middle school.

The Eagle by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
When I was at Junior school in the 50s we had a stern forbidding teacher who loved to recite this poem very loudly to us. He used such expression in his voice and shouted out the last line so fiercely "and like a THUNDERBOLT he FALLS" We were all terrified and lifted the lids of our desks and cowered underneath .....

(I think that both of us we're on our third)
you said you'd always been a clumsy talker
and couldn't find another, shorter word
for 'beloved' or for 'wife' in the inscription,
but not too clumsy that
I've got the envelope that he'd been scrawling,
mis-spelt, mawkish, stylistically appalling
but I can't squeeze more into their stone.

Being from Ireland I am pleased that Yeats is well represented. However, here's one of my favourites:-
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

'Winter' is a great one Ann - I remember that from school too.
It's funny how single lines from classic poems stick out in memory for me, I've never forgotten that line "While greasy joan doth keel the pot".

There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Khatmandu,
There's a little marble cross below the town;
There's a broken-hearted woman tends the grave of Mad Carew,
And the Yellow God forever gazes down.
He was known as "Mad Carew" by the subs at Khatmandu,
He was hotter than they felt inclined to tell;
But for all his foolish pranks, he was worshipped in the ranks,
And the Colonel's daughter smiled on him as well.
He had loved her all along, with a passion of the strong,
The fact that she loved him was plain to all.
She was nearly twenty-one and arrangements had begun
To celebrate her birthday with a ball.
He wrote to ask what present she would like from Mad Carew;
They met next day as he dismissed a squad;
And jestingly she told him then that nothing else would do
But the green eye of the little Yellow God.
On the night before the dance, Mad Carew seemed in a trance,
And they chaffed him as they puffed at their cigars:
But for once he failed to smile, and he sat alone awhile,
Then went out into the night beneath the stars.
He returned before the dawn, with his shirt and tunic torn,
And a gash across his temple dripping red;
He was patched up right away, and he slept through all the day,
And the Colonel's daughter watched beside his bed.
He woke at last and asked if they could send his tunic through;
She brought it, and he thanked her with a nod;
He bade her search the pocket saying "That's from Mad Carew,"
And she found the little green eye of the god.
She upbraided poor Carew in the way that women do,
Though both her eyes were strangely hot and wet;

My Grandma used to say this to my Mum and its been passed down..
