Can anyone help me with this.

Who turned down a regal offer of jam thrice weekly plus what would have amounted to around nine shillings for a years employment?

if you google red queen jam then you get it all in stereo technicolor (TM). Nine shellen is 108 [old] pence which is near double 52 or twopence a week, and the whole quote is on the lines of, "jam every other day and employment at tuppence a week."
