...as art, then this is the right place to ask this.

Often, at the end of plays on R4, the cast & main characters are read out, and then the continuity announcer says 'other parts were played by members of the cast'. Does this mean the people we've just heard about, or some other shadowy set of people deemed too insignificant to be mentioned individually?

It means that the people already mentioned have taken secondary parts. For example shoppers in the queue, diners in the restaurant, bus driver, etc. where these characters are un-named and incidental to the main plot and speak just a few words.
