i have to go to a meeting at the college I'll be attending next year, and they said if you're doing an art/design course, bring your portfolio. I'm doing photography but i dont have a portfolio yet, so...i have some questions if anyone can help!

does it just need to be like a photo album?

how many photos should be in it?

how should i set it out?

also...how big should the photos be?

thanks!

8x10 photos is a common size (that's inches... and it's not the exact ratio of 35mm film) but your college might be quite happy with 6x4, the usual size that Boots do - why not give them a call and ask what they prefer? You won't be the first student who ever started from scratch.
10"x8" is preferable. I would also buy an A4+ size portfiloio from an arts shop. They normally have a ring-binder with individual leaves with black paper inside. They also have brass edges for longer life.
I would put one photo per side and try to mix a few black and white images with the colour ones. You could scan in colour pics and convert to monochrome and print larger at 10" x 8"
Also try to have an interesting story or rationale as to why you took them
Good Luck
You don't say if it's a general art and design course that you are doing or purely photography. Whatever, I would suggest taking any other artwork you've done recently as well - painting, drawing, etc.  It all helps to give them an idea of your streingths and weaknesses.
