It was originally a kind of fancy hairdresser's gown - in the days when rich women had men in to do their hair, powder it, add the flowers, frogs, diamonds or whatever was a la mode - the gown covered their expensive dresses so they didn't get nits and gunk on them.

Then gradually it became the rage to have fancier peignoirs and to lounge filmily as described by Alba.

Mosaic beat me to it, but to pedantically expand on the meaning of the word:
"French: literally, comber, i.e., something worn while one's hair is being combed, equivalent to peign ( er ) to comb (< Late Latin pectināre; see pecten) + -oir"

Yes, literally, it's for wearing when combing your hair (or having it combed), but translates now as 'dressing gown', which, after all, is what a woman would wear when doing her hair in the morning.

French is good for literal descriptions like this. A boudoir is 'a room for sulking in ' (from bouder 'to sulk'). Ah, those French women !
