Any suggestions for good spooky books.  I remember reading Carrie when I was at school and being really spooked and Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd is really good too. Ta

The Collected Ghost Stories of MR James - the best ghost story writer of them all. Some real goose-bumpy stuff.

Ive never read Salems Lot but remember watching the 2 parter with David Soul and being seriously unnerved. I've read some Clive Barker which were really good too.

Dune by James Herbert.

"Midnight is a lonely  place" and "The Lady of Hay" are spine-chilling. Both books are by Barbara Erskine. I read Hawksmoor too and shivered with fear. Ackroyd is an excellent writer - have you read one of his other books, "Chatterton"?

I remember reading The Amitiville Horror when I was a teenager and scared myself stupid.  I think its author is Jay Anson (not too sure).  Also The Shining by Stephen King is really scary  much better than film which I was quite disappointed with

"Haunted" and "The magic Cottage" by James Herbert.

"bag of bones" is the best Stephen King I've ever read

Have to agree with pixi - The Amityville Horror is fantastic.  The fact that it is based on a true story makes it all the more beliveable and scary.  The film is good but the book is so much better!

I can't remember who wrote it, I know Jay Anson did the Amityville Horror II so he may well have done the first one as well (second one not quite as good as the first unfortunately).

You should try Jeffery Deaver, he's a murder mystery horror writer, they're really good and some are pretty scary.

Also try 'Nobody True' by James Herbert. Such a good book and deffinately scary.

I preffer real ghost stories to fictional and one of the best collectors of these was one Elliot O'donnell.

Wether they were true or not he could tell a great ghost story.
