I love Kiefer's work, I've been to a few exhibitions. I didn't realise you could make your own. I have tried working in his style too, its great. Where will you get the lead from?
Well try using varnish instead of shellac, it looks the same when its dry. Lead's quite expensive so you might not find any in skips. Look for pieces of metal the are flat and have a texture or unusual shape. Kiefer also used things like straw glued on and mixed with paint to build up the texture. Maybe some bits of wood too. basically build up a texture with collage material and latex (which is basically Copydex glue) etc. then start working in the paint. Don't hold back although remember he is a figurative painter so don't make it an abstract.
